Writing a Copywriter Cover Letter

There is a certain format that you need to use with any cover letter you create. However, when writing a cover letter for a copywriter position, you should include things to make yourself really stand out. One way to do this is to include 2 to 3 reasons why the employer should consider you for the position. This will summarize your main skills and is the selling point of your resume, especially if you have recently graduated from college. Be sure to keep this short and simple.

The standard form for your cover letter should include:

  • Your contact information, which should be done in block style and set near the top left of your letter.
  • Date
  • The contact details of the employer
  • Salutation
  • The opening paragraph, which should briefly tell of how you found out about the job and why you are interested
  • Middle paragraph, which should offer a summary of your skills, any background information, and critical skills that are relevant to the job. This is also where you would give your reasons why they should choose you.
  • Third paragraph, which can detail soft skills or skills that are not necessarily needed for the position but can come in handy to have.
  • End of letter and closing, where you give your contact information and when you will be available to take on the job. Include a thank you and then closing.

Tips for Writing your Cover Letter and Resume

  • Be sure to proofread and fix any errors. This is a job that needs attention to detail, especially where grammar and spelling are concerned.
  • It’s ok to use a template. However, don’t let it restrict you. Give the letter a personal touch so that it stands out and looks more organized.
  • There is a certain order in which you should organize your information. Depending on what is most relevant to the job you are applying for, you need to choose whether it’s appropriate to list your experience or your education first. When you list your job experience, always do so from most recent to oldest.
  • Keep your cover letter short and to the point. It shouldn’t be more than one page, so be sure to summarize your skills. You can give more detail about your skills and experience in your resume.

Copywriter Job-hunting Tips

Use online networking and social media. This is an age where everything can be found online. Use sites such as Monster and LinkedIn and other professional networking sites to get your resume out there. Face-to-face networking still has a place in this day and age too. You can submit your resume and application at job fairs and at the company’s site.

Do your research about the companies that are in your field. Even if they are not currently hiring, you can still submit a resume and ask to be considered for any job openings when they do come up.

Follow up with the companies that you have applied to. It will show that you are interested and are making an effort above other people applying for the position.

Stay positive! Sometimes the job market is hard, but you shouldn’t let this drag you down. Staying optimistic gives your confidence a boost when it comes to handling disappointments and setbacks.
