A DTap vaccination is meant to protect children from Diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis. This vaccine is administered as follows.
DTaP Routine Vaccination
DTap vaccination is given as a 5-dose series where children are immunized at the age of 2, 4, 6, 15-18 months, and the last dose is given between the age of 4-6 years. It is to be noted that dose 4 can be administered to children as early as 12 months on the condition that the 3rd dose was administered 6 months prior. On the other hand, if the 4th dose of DTap vaccination was unintentionally administered as early as the age of 12 months, it may be counted if at all the 3rd dose was given at least 4 months prior.
Catch-up Vaccination
Children do not necessarily require dose 5 of DTap vaccination provided he or she received the 4th dose at the age of 4 years or older AND at least 6 months after the 3rd dose.
Special situations
When treating all wounds in children less than 7 years of age and who have received 3 or more tetanus-toxoid-containing vaccine doses, proper wound management is recommended. DTap vaccination should be administered to all wounds, except clean and minor wounds, if the child received the last dose of tetanus-toxoid-containing vaccine 5 years prior.
