School Position Letter of Intent to Return Examples

School districts usually demand a letter of intent to return from individuals working in the previously mentioned positions with an attached due date. Upon receiving such notice, the individuals are required to submit their letter of intent to return before the mentioned due date; else, they are deemed to have declined their employment and be terminated by the end of their current school year.

The school position letter of intent to return is written by individuals working in non-teaching elementary and secondary school positions such as principals, coaches, librarians, special needs assistants, etc., to inform their school district of their intent to continue working their current job in the next school year.

The school position letter of intent can also be used to ask for a transfer. In the event that the individual is looking to be transferred to another school that is under their current school district, they are required to inform their school district of their intent to continue working with them but are requesting to be transferred to a new school.

Writing the Intent to Return Letter

Whether one is looking to inform the school district of their intent to return to work or asking for a transfer to another school within the same school district, there are general things that must be included in any school position letter of intent to return that one should know about. Such things include:

The header

The header of the letter should be placed at the top left-hand side of your letter. The header must be included when writing the letter of intent to return, helps the recipient identify whom the letter is from, and provides them with a way to contact the individual in return. This is important, especially if one is looking to be transferred to another school- one would like to get notified if their request sailed through or was declined. If one is using a preprinted letterhead, they already have a ready-made header for the letter. If not, include the address at the top of the letter, including the street address, city, state, and Zip Code. Skip a line and include the date of writing the letter.

Recipient’s address

Also referred to as the “Inside address,” the recipient’s address should include the name of the person to whom you are addressing the letter, their title, the company’s name, and their full mailing address. It is important to address it to the right person when writing the school position letter of intent to return. This will ensure that they receive the letter on time and not consider the individual as having declined the offer to continue working in the next school year.

Salutation

Skip a line after writing the recipient’s address and include the salutation. Since the School Position Letter of Intent to Return is an official letter, one must use a professional salutation in the letter.

For instance,

One may use “Dear” if they know the recipient’s name or title, e.g., “Dear Mrs. Rachael.” or the generic “To Whom It May Concern,” if they do not know the recipient’s name or title.

Body

The body of the letter of intent to return should be divided into three subcategories: Introduction- who you are and why you are writing, main content- i.e., the reason for writing, and a summary- a reiteration of why one is writing the letter. When writing the school position letter of intent to return, the letter’s first paragraph should inform the recipient who they are and why they are writing the letter. The letter should be short and to the point, and the recipient should understand from the get-go why the letter has been addressed to them.

Unless one is writing to inform the school district of their intent to be transferred to another school that’s under the same school district, their second paragraph should thank the recipient for taking the time to go through the letter and provide them with the means to contact them should they have any questions.

Suppose one is writing to request a transfer. In that case, their second paragraph of the letter should inform the recipient of their skills, experiences, and qualifications that make them suited for the position they are requesting to be transferred to.

Closing

The closing of the letter should have three key parts: Complementary close, signature, and print name. The complimentary close is simply a short and polite remark that ends the letter. When writing the School position letter of intent to return, one should stick with a more formal closing such as “Thank you,“Sincerely,” or “Yours sincerely.” End the letter by including the signature and print name. Also, mention any attachments, if any, at the end of the letter.
