The nomination of an employee of the month involves providing reasons why such employees have been nominated for such awards. When selecting the preferred candidate, one should include the following key components in the nomination form:

    • The name of the Employee being nominated
    • The title of the Employee being nominated
    • Reasons why the Employee is being nominated

Selection of the Employee of the Month

The best way to motivate and cultivate a positive and dedicated work environment in any organization is by introducing different employee recognition programs. One such program is the Employee of the month award that fosters competition among employees leading to increased organizational productivity. It is usually up to the employer/management to ensure that the process of nominating, selecting, and awarding excellent employees is free, fair, and impartial.

Below are steps that one should follow when selecting the Employee of the month:

    Voting

Voting is the first step when selecting the Employee of the month. Here, the employer requests all the employees to vote for the employee they believe should be given the award for the Employee of the month.

For an employee to be selected, an approved nomination form is filled and submitted within the set deadline by all employees. It is important to note that since the employee of the month programs are usually very competitive, the employees are usually allowed to submit their nomination forms anonymously. The nominator does not have to necessarily be the director, manager, or supervisor of a specific department. However, they must have vast knowledge about the employee’s contribution to the area that they are nominating them for.

After the nomination is done, the form is forwarded to the department head to review and verify that the nominated employee has not had any corrective or wrong actions following the set review period of their nomination.

The employer/committee representing the different departments will then review the nomination forms based on the set goals and select at least three employees for the position of the employee of the month award.  They will then sit and discuss the merits of all the selected nominees and cast their votes for the award winner.

    Qualifying employee

The employer then lists all the employees eligible for the Employee of the Month award. This is usually a matter of both equity and optics, and the eligibility criteria chosen by the employer should be in line with the objective of the program. For instance, if the program’s objective was to motivate and reward employees and foster healthy competition in the workplace, then the employer, i.e., the executives, managers, and top-tier level employees, should not be included in such awards.

Although the management almost always knows the Employee that will be selected for the award since they continually evaluate the Employee’s performance, such programs are usually cultivated to create a sense of fairness and a general sense of community in the workplace.

    Grading overall performance

Different organizations have different methods and rules for evaluating nominated employees. Such methods and rules usually come into play when more than one candidate is selected for the Employee of the Month award, which is almost always the case with large corporations where competition for such awards is often very stiff.

The employer should lay out the evaluation criteria and factor in popular support in their final decision. The criteria chosen should be clear, transparent, and consistent – one that the employees unanimously accept.

    Reasons for nomination

The employer should communicate the Employee of the month selection criteria before the nomination process. All the nomination metrics should be clearly understood by the employees, and the value for such nomination made clear to them.

    Holding an award meeting

In order to cultivate a sense of fairness and nature, a general sense of community in the workplace, and have maximum impact on all the employees, the employer should organize an award-giving meeting for the Employee of the month to celebrate and acknowledge their effort. Some employers choose to offer gifts and other perks, but in the least, the Employee of the month should be awarded a certificate for their outstanding performance.

    Final Words

Employee motivation is very important in any organization as it fosters productivity. Introducing motivational programs such as the Employee of the month nomination program can help create healthy competition in the workplace, thereby increasing employee productivity.

As the employer, it is vital to set standards and procedures for selecting the Employee of the month, and such metrics should be made clear to the employees before the nomination commences. Failing to do so may create company politics, thereby creating a hostile environment for the employees, as they may feel that some employees are being favored. Ensure that the process used is free, fair, credible, and acceptable by all employees when selecting the Employee of the month.
