Teacher Appreciation Letter

A Teacher Appreciation Letter is written by a student who wants to express his/her gratitude and heartfelt thanks to a teacher who has made considerable efforts to shape the student’s academic life or has helped them complete a school project successfully.

Teachers play a significant role in helping students learn, develop, and find specific interests and passions. However, despite all their hard work and going the extra mile to help make a difference in each student’s life, teachers’ efforts are often overlooked, and they get very little credit for their work. Therefore, writing an appreciation letter to a teacher might be one of the most heartfelt gestures you can do as a student. A well-written appreciation letter to your favorite teachers will not only show how much you care about them but also help show others you are thankful for their role in helping shape who you are today.

Steps Involved in Writing a Teacher Appreciation Letter

Generally, a teacher appreciation letter should be sent upon the successful completion of an academic grade. Nonetheless, these letters can also be sent during the teacher’s celebration week or anytime a student needs to appreciate a teacher for helping them work on assignments or projects. When looking to write a thank you letter to a teacher, keep in mind that the writing should be formal, and the message of the letter should be concise. Here is a guide on the most suitable format to use and what to include in the letter:

Salutation

Firstly, start your teacher appreciation letter by writing a formal opening salutation that addresses the teacher by their name. Make sure to use the teacher’s right name and a title they prefer to go by. The title you use on the opening salutation should be the same as the one you use on the envelope of the thank you letter or card.

For example, Dear Ms. Parker, or Dear Mr. Livingston

Include reasons why you are thankful

Secondly, begin your appreciation letter by briefly stating who you are and explaining why you are thanking the teacher to clearly and immediately communicate the purpose of the letter. Then, use a few sentences to briefly express your gratefulness and state your reasons for thanking the teacher.

Write a summary of the most memorable event

The next step involves providing a summary of your most memorable events with the teacher using specific examples. Using 2-3 sentences, briefly state the most important life skills or lessons that the teacher taught you, a memorable moment or event, how the teacher helped you, or state the qualities you loved the most about the teacher. This makes the letter to be more meaningful and impactful to the teacher.

Explain how lessons learned will help in the future

Next in your teacher appreciation letter, describe how you intend to use the skills and lessons that the teacher taught you or how these skills and lessons have helped you become the person you are today. If their lessons helped you change your behavior, attitude towards a particular subject, or if they helped you get through a difficult time in life, make sure to mention these details in your appreciation letter to a teacher.

Enlist teacher’s qualities

If there are any qualities that you love most about the teacher, for example, their overall personality and teaching technique, you can write them in the thank you letter. While writing this section, try to look back and reflect on how the teacher treated you and your classmates each day and how they planned and presented their lessons back then. If it is worth mentioning in the thank you letter or card, then make sure to state it in the appreciation letter to the teacher concisely.

Restate your appreciation

Conclude your appreciation letter to the teacher by briefly restating that you are thankful for everything that the teacher has done for you and your time in their class. Then, in a few sentences, state that you wish them well in all their endeavors and remind them of their positive impact on society.

Tip: While writing this section, don’t forget to include the two elementary but powerful words, “Thank You.”

Use an appropriate sign-off and provide your signature

End your letter by including an appropriate sign-off such as, sincerely, warm wishes, kind regards, thanking you once again, all the best, etc. Afterward, write your name and signature.

Important Considerations

To make your appreciation letter more meaningful and impactful, there are a few things that you should keep in mind and put into consideration. They include:

Handwritten letter vs. typed letter

If possible, consider handwriting the letter as most teachers will appreciate a written note more than a typed letter which may feel generic and less personal. However, if your handwriting is not neat, or you want to submit the letter via email, you can type it on the computer. Make sure that the message you type is original and personalize your document as much as you can.

Use a formal tone

As a sign of respect for the teacher, use a formal tone throughout your appreciation letter for the teacher. For example, in your greeting/salutation, write, Dear Mrs. Carrington instead of Hey/hi Carrington!

Write concisely

Teachers are primarily busy professionals, and they might not have the time to read lengthy letters from students. Thus, communicate your message concisely using 2-3 short paragraphs. Your paragraphs should only be 2-4 sentences long.

Proofread

Before submitting your appreciation letter to the teacher, consider proofreading it to ensure it is grammatically correct and free of spelling errors. You may also consider requesting a friend to review the letter and provide you their honest feedback.
